Al-Ahly has a fierce rivalry with local rivals Al-Zamalek. The derby matches are so intense, that foreign referees are brought in to officiate the game.

Al-Ahly recently broke a 45-match winning streak and also 52 unbeating streak. This is the longest undefeated streak in the Egyptian league. The team defeated Tunisian club Étoile Sahel to win the CAF Champions League in 2005, thereby advancing to the revived FIFA Club World Championship to be held in Japan.
