Substitute Alseny Camara headed Libyan debutants Al Ittihad to a surprise 1-0 win over their Algerian visitors JS Kabylie at the start of the group phase of the MTN CAF Champions League in Tripoli on Friday.

The Guinea-born striker snuck in the back post to latch onto a looping cross from winger Al Khalifa Rahuma to give Al Ittihad a winning start in their Group A game.


The 85th minute effort was a rare attack on goal by Al Ittihad, the first side from Libya to reach the league phase of continent’s top club competition.


Salem Rewani went just wide of goal in Al Ittihad’s first serous attack, which came in the 65th minute and then later wasted a free kick opportunity from a good position.

JSK enjoyed the majority of the possession but were thwarted by a tough home defence. The best chance for JSK fell to their top sorer Cheikh Oumar Dabo in the 66th minute, but his attempt was smothered by two defenders.


Royal Armed Forces of Morocco host Etoile Sahel of Tunisia in the other group A match in Rabat on Saturday.


Defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt play Al Hilal of Sudan in Group B on Sunday,
preceded by the meeting between Tunisia’s Esperance and ASEC Abidjan from Cote d’Ivoire in Tunis on Saturday.
