Holders Al Ahly of Egypt grabbed two goals in the last five minutes to beat Al Hilal of Sudan 2-0 in their MTN CAF Champions League Group B match in Cairo on Sunday but it proved an unconvincing start to the group phase of the competition for the holders.

Follow up:

Substitute strikers Flavio and Osama Hosni grabbed the goals to spare the blushes of Al Ahly , seeking an unprecedented third successive Champions League title.

There was a touch of fortune about Flavio’s effort as he shoved aside AlHilal defender Amar Ramadan Abdelaziz but then produced a stroke of genius as he scooped the ball over the head of the onrushing goalkeeper Mahjoub El Moez and into the back of the net.

The 85th minute goal came as a major relief to Al Ahly, who had attacked with enterprise early on in the game but then found themselves increasingly frustrated as opportunities dried up.

Osama Hosni added the second, stealing unmarked at the back post to head home three minutes into stoppage time at the end of the match.

AlAhly head the standings in Group B after the weekend’s other opening match between Tunisia’s Esperance and ASEC Abidjan of the Ivory Coast ended in a goalless draw in Tunis on Saturday.
