Sudan’s Al Hilal swept to the top of their MTN CAF Champions League group on Sunday, handing holders Al Ahly their heaviest defeat in the competition for 30 years.
Al Hilal won 3-0 at home in Omdurman with a dominant second half showing against their Egyptian opponents, leaving the fight for semifinal places in Group B still wide open. Mozambican defender Dario Khan opened the scoring with a powerful header from a corner just before the hour mark, rising above Al Ahly’s Egyptian international goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari.

Follow up:
The second came 12 minutes later in more spectacular fashion as substitute Hassan Isaac Korongo hit a stunning long range shot from midway inside the Al Ahly half along the ground and past Al Hadari.
The rout was completed three minutes from the end by Al Hilal’s Nigerian import Ndubuisi Eze, who squeezed past two defenders and slotted the ball wide of the goalkeeper.
Al Ahly last lost 3-0 in 1977 when beaten in the quarterfinal stage of the old-format Champions Cup by Hearts of Oak of Ghana.
Sunday’s loss was the second successive defeat in the group for the Egyptians, although they need just a draw at home to ASEC Abidjan in their last game on September 2, to qualify for the semifinals. Al Ahly are chasing an unprecedented third successive Champions League victory.
Al Hilal and Al Ahly both have nine points, with ASEC Abidjan two behind in third place Al Hilal finished their campaign away at Tunisia’s Esperance, who were eliminated earlier on Sunday when they lost to ASEC Abidjan in the Cote d'Ivoire capital.
