Defending MTN Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt kicked off the defence of their crown with an emphatic 4-2 victory over Group C rivals Cameroon in Kumasi on Tuesday.
The Pharaohs surged into a 3-0 half time lead thanks to a penalty from Hosni Abd Rabou and a superb brace from Hamburg SV striker Mohamed Zidan. Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o ignited hope of a comeback from the four time African champions with a header five minutes after the break but when Abd Rabou scored his second with less than ten minutes to play, Egypt knew they had secured all three points. Cameroon and Egypt on Monday had a last training session ahead of Tuesday’s Group C match of the MTN Africa Cup of Nations between the two nations.
Cameroon’s session started at 4pm at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium. It was a light training session which ended with a fun exercise. The session was concluded with a group prayer. Players didn’t talk to the media and coach Otto Pfister’s only reaction after training was “no comment”.  Egypt get good CAN draw.Ahmed 19th October 2007
Title holders Egypt have been drawn in a relatively easy group of the 2008 African Cup of Nations, sitting in Group C along with Cameroon, Sudan and Zambia.
Hosts Ghana fared better than holders Egypt Ghana are in Group A with poor travellers Morocco, unpredictable Guinea and minnows Namibia and a team powered by midfielders Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah look set for a top-two finish and a quarter-finals slot. Every major football tournament delivers one fearsome group and in Ghana it will be Group B where giants Nigeria and Ivory Coast will not relish tackling fellow west Africans Mali and Benin.  |
