Sulley Muntari delivered a wonder goal in the final minute of the game to give hosts Ghana a winning start to the MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Guinea. in Accra on Sunday.


Ghana hit the woodwork three times, took the lead 10 minutes into the second half but in then end had to rely on a 25 metre bullet from the Portsmouth winger to grab all three points in the tournament’s opening match.

Black Stars In For A Tough Opening Match

Four-time champions Ghana open the 26th edition of the MTN Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday with a tricky tie against Guinea in Accra.


The Black Stars have been tipped as one of the favourites of this year’s tournament but the host nation must first beat the in-form Sylli National if they are to make an impression in this competition.


Ghana are under pressure to emulate the two previous hosts of the tournament, Egypt in 2006 and Tunisia in 2004, to win the tournament and must first assert themselves in the difficult Group A that includes Morocco and Namibia.

Egypt Left Stranded

Furious Egypt were left stranded at the MTN Africa Cup of Nations on Friday as organisers botched up their travel arrangements.


Egypt were due to fly from Accra to Kuamsi, where they will play thier first game on Tuesday against four-time champions Cameroon.


Egypt arrived late on Thursday in the Ghanaian capital Accra and could not fly onto Kumasi straight away because there are no flight flights to Ghana’s second city.

Egypt get good CAN draw.

Title holders Egypt have been drawn in a relatively easy group of the 2008 African Cup of Nations, sitting in Group C along with Cameroon, Sudan and Zambia.
Hosts Ghana fared better than holders Egypt Ghana are in Group A with poor travellers Morocco, unpredictable Guinea and minnows Namibia and a team powered by midfielders Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah look set for a top-two finish and a quarter-finals slot.

Every major football tournament delivers one fearsome group and in Ghana it will be Group B where giants Nigeria and Ivory Coast will not relish tackling fellow west Africans Mali and Benin.
