Defending MTN Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt kicked off the defence of their crown with an emphatic 4-2 victory over Group C rivals Cameroon in Kumasi on Tuesday.
The Pharaohs surged into a 3-0 half time lead thanks to a penalty from Hosni Abd Rabou and a superb brace from Hamburg SV striker Mohamed Zidan. Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o ignited hope of a comeback from the four time African champions with a header five minutes after the break but when Abd Rabou scored his second with less than ten minutes to play, Egypt knew they had secured all three points. Mohamed Zidan's Hamburg missed out on the chance to go top in the Bundesliga following a 2-1 defeat to Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Ivorian striker Boubacar Sanogo put Bremen in front on the quarter-hour mark before Hamburg skipper Rafael van der Vaart leveled the score in the 61st minute.
